SwimDog is a purpose-built outdoor swimming pool for dogs, located at Tresillian Barton near Newquay in Cornwall. Designed for exercise, confidence building and plenty of fun, it gives dogs the chance to enjoy the water in a secure and controlled environment away from the unpredictability of the sea.
The 32ft by 16ft pool is four feet deep and has been designed specifically with dogs in mind. Gentle ramps, steps and different entry points help dogs of varying sizes and swimming abilities get comfortable around the water. Buoyancy jackets, toys and rewards are available during sessions, and a member of the SwimDog team is in the water to provide encouragement and support.
There’s a good choice of sessions depending on your dog. First-time visitors can start with an induction, while puppies from 13 weeks can take part in dedicated Paddle Pup sessions. Private swimming sessions are available for dogs that prefer having the space to themselves, including nervous or reactive dogs, while Private Pool Parties can accommodate up to five dogs. Confident and sociable swimmers can also join public Pool Party sessions for a more energetic group experience.
Owners can get involved too. During suitable sessions, adults and children are welcome to enter the pool with their dog, although you can stay poolside if you’d rather keep dry.
The surrounding paddock is fully fenced, with a system of gates and separate entrance and exit routes helping dogs enjoy their visit without unnecessary interaction with dogs from other sessions. There’s also a dog shower for rinsing off afterwards, changing facilities, picnic benches and a sheltered viewing area. Fresh drinking water and clean bowls are provided.
SwimDog is particularly useful for dogs that need help building confidence around water, as well as energetic dogs looking for a different form of exercise. Dogs aren’t forced to enter the pool, so sessions can be adapted to their individual temperament and confidence.
It’s important to note that SwimDog isn’t a hydrotherapy or medical facility and doesn’t provide medical advice. Instead, the focus is on safe recreational swimming, exercise, enrichment and helping dogs become more confident around water.
For dog owners looking for something genuinely different to do in Cornwall, SwimDog offers a fun experience where the day out really is all about the dog.
