Choosing a dog-friendly hotel in Devon

Devon’s dog-friendly hotels fall into three types of place, each giving a different kind of holiday. Dartmoor has the classic country hotels and moorland inns: open moor outside, a fire in the lounge, and a drying room for the boots. Two Bridges, right in the middle of the moor, is a good example, with riverside walks from the door. Tavistock and the edge of the moor work well if you want a town nearby too.

On the coast, the north and south are very different. North Devon has dramatic cliffs, wooded valleys and the long surf beaches around Woolacombe. Orchard House in Lynmouth is 100 yards from the beach and right on the coast path, and every dog gets its own welcome box. South Devon is calmer and sunnier, with estuaries, harbour towns such as Dartmouth, and hotels tucked into coves.

In between, mid Devon and the Cornish border have quieter country-house hotels and village inns, often with fishing rivers and good restaurants. They’re a good choice if you want long lanes and footpaths more than beaches.
