Description

Forget the car keys for a while. At The Seagate, you’re already where you want to be.

Right on The Quay in the fishing village of Appledore, this characterful pub with rooms puts you in the heart of one of North Devon’s prettiest coastal villages. Step outside and you’re surrounded by colourful cottages, boats bobbing on the water and the kind of quayside views that make you want to order another drink and stay a little longer.

Inside, The Seagate has 17 individually designed bedrooms, split between rooms above the pub and a converted sail loft just a couple of minutes away on The Quay. Expect comfy beds, crisp linen, Nespresso coffee machines, generous snack baskets and plenty of character, with selected rooms offering lovely sea views. Larger rooms can also accommodate families and have space for a dog bed or two.

Then there’s the pub itself. The Seagate is very much a place for eating, drinking and settling in. The menu brings together fresh fish and seafood, hearty pub favourites and seasonal British dishes, while Sunday lunch is a particular highlight. In summer, grab a table outside and watch life unfold along the quay; when the weather turns, retreat indoors for a proper pub atmosphere and a cosy meal.

Dogs are very much part of the welcome. Dog-friendly bedrooms come with a doggy bed or blanket, water bowl and a hamper of treats, so your four-legged companion gets their own VIP arrival. Up to two dogs can stay in a dog-friendly room, with the current dog charge listed as £25 per night.

And the location is particularly good for dogs that like variety. You can start with a wander around Appledore Quay, head towards Northam Burrows for a longer stretch of the legs, or make your way to Westward Ho! and its huge sandy beach. The South West Coast Path opens up even more possibilities, while boat trips across to Instow provide a rather fun way to explore the coastline.

Back at The Seagate, there’s no need to leave your dog behind while you eat. The pub welcomes dogs, including at designated dog-friendly dining spaces, so you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner together. It’s the sort of setup that makes a weekend away feel wonderfully uncomplicated: walk, eat, explore, repeat.

For couples, the hotel also offers a range of stay packages, from bed and breakfast to dinner, bed and breakfast and two-night coastal breaks. Book direct and you can also benefit from extras such as later checkout and potential room upgrades, subject to availability.

What really sets The Seagate apart is its personality. This isn’t a polished, anonymous hotel where you could be anywhere. It’s a lively village pub, a place to eat, drink and meet people, with comfortable bedrooms upstairs and the North Devon coast right outside.
