Saltbox Escapes is a small, family-run collection of dog-friendly accommodation in English Bicknor, tucked between the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. Surrounded by countryside, it’s particularly well suited to dog owners who want plenty of walking and outdoor adventures within easy reach.
There are three places to stay, each with its own character. The Coach House is a beautifully renovated 19th-century stone building with one upstairs bedroom, sleeping up to three guests in a king-size bed and separate single bed. There’s an open-plan living space, well-equipped kitchen, wood burner and private terrace overlooking the surrounding countryside.
For something a little different, Tarragon and Ginger are two cosy Hobbit Huts set within the meadow. Each has a king-size bed and double sofa bed, making them suitable for a couple, an extra adult or a family with up to two children. Inside you’ll find a kitchen, heating and air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a smart TV, while outside there’s a terrace with a firepit and access to the shared gardens and meadow.
Dogs are very much part of the experience at Saltbox Escapes, with up to two welcome in both the Coach House and Hobbit Huts. Dog blankets and towels are provided, and there’s a hose in the courtyard for washing off muddy paws after a walk. The accommodation sits within around 1.5 acres of shared meadow and gardens, giving you plenty of outdoor space during your stay. The grounds are fenced, although they’re not guaranteed to be completely secure for dogs.
The location is one of the biggest reasons to stay here. Symonds Yat Rock is around a mile and a half away on foot, and there are plenty of other walks through the surrounding countryside and Forest of Dean. The River Wye is close by too, opening up even more opportunities for walking and days outdoors.
There are dog-friendly pubs within walking distance, while Coleford, Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye can all be reached in less than 20 minutes by car. Forest attractions including Puzzlewood, Mallards Pike and the area’s many walking and cycling trails are also within easy reach.
For a dog-friendly break in the Forest of Dean, Saltbox Escapes offers something a little more personal than a large holiday park, with characterful accommodation, plenty of outdoor space and some of the area’s best countryside right on the doorstep.
