Overtown Manor is a historic country retreat in Wroughton, near Swindon, with roots dating back to the late 17th century. Set within the Wiltshire countryside, the manor has been in the same family for generations and offers a peaceful base for exploring the North Wessex Downs, the Ridgeway, Barbury Castle and the historic sites around Avebury.

There are two accommodation options: the main manor house and the separate Garden Cottage. The six-bedroom manor is available for exclusive hire and sleeps up to 14 guests, making it well suited to family celebrations, reunions and group weekends. Five bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, while the sixth has its own private bathroom. Inside, guests can enjoy generous living spaces, open fireplaces, a large dining room, a fully equipped kitchen and a games room with a pool table, darts and table tennis.

The three-bedroom Garden Cottage is a more compact option, sleeping up to five guests. It has a comfortable sitting room with a working log burner, a modern kitchen, dining space, private entrance and parking. Its enclosed garden gives dogs a secure outdoor area to enjoy during the stay. For larger groups, the cottage can also be booked alongside the manor, with combined accommodation for up to 19 guests.

Dogs are welcome at Overtown, and the Garden Cottage is especially handy for a break with pets. Dog-friendly touches include a bed, bowls and treats on arrival, towels and a wash area for muddy paws, plus local guides to dog-friendly pubs and cafés. Walks are available from the doorstep, making it easy to get out into the surrounding countryside. Dog charges and limits differ between the cottage and the main house, so check the terms for your chosen accommodation before booking.

Outside, the property has extensive gardens and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool. Guests staying in the manor can also enjoy the games room, garden seating and space to spend time together. The pool is generally open from late spring to early autumn, depending on the season and booking arrangement.

For days out, visit Avebury’s stone circle and gardens, explore the walking routes around the Marlborough Downs, or head into nearby Swindon for shops, cafés and local attractions. Overtown Manor offers a flexible country setting for a dog-friendly break, whether you’re planning a gathering with friends and family or a quieter stay in the Garden Cottage.

A country stay with a cookery school

Overtown Manor is also home to a cookery school run by owner Nancy Lawson, a trained chef with a passion for seasonal, locally sourced food. Guests and visitors can book private cookery lessons, join practical group sessions or take part in demonstrations covering everything from everyday cooking skills to seasonal recipes and special themes. It’s an appealing extra for food lovers and groups looking to combine a countryside stay with a hands-on culinary experience. Some courses can also be tailored to individual interests or skill levels, with advance booking required.
