About Dorset House
There’s something rather special about staying in a house with a story to tell. Dorset House is an early 19th-century, Grade II-listed Georgian property in Lyme Regis, overlooking one of England’s most remarkable stretches of coastline.
Once known as Gibraltar Lodge, the house has served many purposes over its two centuries, from private residence to hotel and guesthouse. Today, it offers a more intimate kind of stay, with five individually styled bedrooms, thoughtful contemporary touches and a real emphasis on good hospitality.
The rooms each have their own character. Sea View and Lighthouse are the larger rooms, with far-reaching coastal views towards Golden Cap and, on clear days, Portland. The three House Rooms — Fossil, Church View and Porthole — offer their own quieter corners. All five rooms have en-suite bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and underfloor heating.
Breakfast is a highlight, with the team taking care over the food and accommodating a range of dietary requirements when arranged in advance. There’s also a cosy snug with an honesty bar, where you can settle in with a drink after a day out exploring.
For guests travelling with a dog, two rooms are available for small, well-behaved dogs under 15kg: Church View and Sea View. The one-off £30 dog supplement includes a thoughtful Pooch Package with a custom-made dog bed, water bowl and paw balm. Dogs are welcome in the snug and on the veranda, and may join breakfast service if settled. They must be kept on a lead in indoor and shared areas and cannot be left unattended in the bedroom.
Lyme Regis is a wonderful place to explore on foot. The beach is around a ten-minute walk downhill, while the town’s historic streets lead to independent shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants. The Town Mill, Mary Anning statue and Jane Austen Gardens are all within easy reach, and the South West Coast Path offers opportunities for longer coastal walks with your dog.
Dorset House is a particularly good fit for couples looking for a little comfort and character by the sea. It is normally an adults-only property, and there is no private car park, so guests should plan for nearby public parking. With its historic setting, welcoming hosts and easy access to the coast, it offers a memorable base for discovering Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast.
