Choosing a dog-friendly hotel in Somerset

Somerset doesn’t have many big hotels. What it has instead are old coaching inns and village pubs with rooms, and they tend to be very relaxed about dogs. Expect flagstone floors, log fires, a water bowl by the bar, and walks straight from the door.

Exmoor is the obvious choice if you want wild walking: heather moor, deep wooded combes and the coast at Porlock not far away. The Crown at Exford, a 17th-century coaching inn right in the middle of the moor, is a good example. East of the M5, the Mendips, Wells and the villages of south Somerset are quieter and gentler, with good food pubs. The Crossways near Wells is one of these.

Between those areas lie the Quantock Hills, England’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which are small enough to walk across in a day and are especially good in late summer, when the heather is out.
