About The Crown Hotel, Exford
Exford is one of Exmoor’s prettiest villages, and The Crown has been here since the 17th century, when it was a coaching inn. It’s still family-run: Sara looks after it with her father, Chris, and her son, Ellis. Red deer, Exmoor ponies and birds of prey are a regular sight on the moorland around the village.
The rooms are all en-suite and individually styled, with single, twin, double and king-size options. Each one has a TV, tea and coffee, bottled water and biscuits, and breakfast is included. Cyclists get locked overnight bike storage with charging. If you’d rather cook for yourself, there’s also a three-bedroom self-catering cottage with a big back garden and a fire pit.
Dinner is served every night in the country bar or the lounge, cooked to order with local, organic and free-range produce where possible. Monday is curry night and Thursday is grill night. Behind the bar there are Exmoor Ales, Chris Piper wines and Northmoor gin. Log fires burn all winter, and in summer you can eat outside.
Dogs are always welcome, for £9 a night, and walks start straight from the door. Come back muddy, dry off by the fire and order a pint.
Rooms start at £95 a night for a single and £129 for a double or twin, with breakfast included.
